Many people have heard of it, but aren’t sure exactly where it is. They know it’s an island, someplace in the Antilles archipelago. Do they imagine it to be hip and sophisticated, or more authentic, discreet, and laid back?

This tiny rock, smaller and less populated than many villages in the French countryside, has few resources other than its charm, its perpetual sunshine, the underwater wealth of its Marine Park, and its protected landscapes.

And of course, the island is an excellent tourist destination: one of the most varied and upscale, a wide choice of leisure activities and nautical sports, prestigious sailing regattas, a full calendar of cultural events, and the irresistible allure of great shopping.

Useful information

Getting around

This exquisite island of 21 square kilometres with its rugged shore line seems to float in the blue Caribbean. It is dotted with 14 soft white sand beaches that invite relaxation and play with guests diving or sailing in the irresistibly clear seas. There is a variety of wildlife: sea iguanas, turtles, bright hummingbirds, swooping pelicans and of course the myriad of fish on the coral reefs.

Gustavia is the main town, a busy port home to sailing yachts and stylish shops. The town has hints of its 18th century Swedish history in a wooden Anglican church and of course its name, (after King Gustav III) while pink roofs, shuttered windows and clapboard facades retain the charming authentic character.

The island is a star in the French West Indies when it comes to gourmet pleasures. International chefs are drawn to the island’s enthusiasm for fine food and are inspired to heights of creativity.
